As the Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF22) comes to Brisbane from 28-29 September, this is the perfect opportunity to dig into the basics of this way of business and learn about the big ideas and principles shaping the successes of social enterprises all over the world.
The agenda for SEWF22 is jam-packed with sessions and opportunities to learn from those who are at the forefront of the social enterprise sector in Australia and beyond. Not sure where to begin? Here are five sessions to help you get the most out of the event if you’re new to social enterprise – whether you’re joining online or in-person.
- Designing the right business model (in-person only)
Wednesday, 28 September 2022, 10:15 – 11:00 (AEST)
Designing the right social enterprise business model to align with your vision, purpose and goals drives positive and sustainable impact. Join this interactive workshop to clarify your vision and find the right building blocks for your business model using the Lean Business Canvas as a framework.
- A new business relationship – private sector and social enterprise partnerships (hybrid)
Wednesday, 28 September 2022, 11:30 – 12:15 (AEST)
For many years social enterprises criticised corporate values, business practices and the pursuit of profit. At the same time, many corporations viewed social enterprises as insignificant and unrelated to the world of business. This panel will look at changing practices, whether a better relationship can be formed based on mutual value and why this is important.
Moderator Linda Brown (Torrens University, Australia) will lead the discussion as Audette Exel AO (Adara Group, Australia), Annie Lewin (Google.org, Australia) and Izzy Fenwick (Fenwick Group, Aotearoa New Zealand) share how these relationships are shifting for the future.
- Debate: Social enterprise is too narrowly defined, it’s all about impact, whatever the structure (hybrid)
Wednesday, 28 September 2022, 13:15pm – 14:00 (AEST)
For some, all anybody should care about is impact, the rest is irrelevant. For others, structure is crucial to ensure social enterprises are not at the mercy of shareholders who often prioritise profit over impact.
Brett de Hoedt from Hootville Communications will be moderating this debate, while Tom Dawkins (StartSomeGood, Australia), Neil McLean (Social Enterprise Academy, Scotland), Nicola Nation (Akina, Aotearoa New Zealand) and Libby Ward-Christie (Centre for Social Impact, Swinburne, Australia) get fired up in an entertaining discussion around a topic that can often divide opinion within the social enterprise movement.
- Impact investment readiness workshop (in-person)
Thursday, 29 September 2022, 13:15pm – 14:00 (AEST)
Get a practical, interactive look under the hood at the investment readiness journey with the Social Impact Hub.. This workshop will help you prepare for impact investment now or in the future. It will also help you determine whether impact investment is the right path for you. You will learn more about the impact investment landscape in Australia, as well as the types of impact capital and tips on how to approach investors.
This is the perfect session if you want to put on your magnifying glass to the reality of impact investment in Australia and understand how you can benefit.
- Verification and certification: why do they matter? (in-person)
Thursday, 29 September 2022, 15:30 – 16:15 (AEST)
The social enterprise movement is fragmented across sectors, issues, regions and different languages. This makes verification essential to increasing business-to-business and business-to-consumer markets.
Hear from some of the intermediaries involved in developing common standards and values to make this possible, including Emma Joyce (Banyule Council, Australia), Rebecca Green (Social Traders, Australia), Maeve Curtin (SEWF, Scotland) and Clair Millar, GHD (Australia)
